Young European Film-makers Ready to Get Off to a Flying Start

EFP FUTURE FRAMES presents ten exceptional young directors at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2018

Putting outstanding young directing talents from Europe in the spotlight, EFP FUTURE FRAMES presents ten film students and graduates and their award-winning work at the 53rd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) in the Czech Republic (June 29 - July 7, 2018).

Now in its fourth year, EFP's fruitful cooperation with the festival will introduce the filmmakers and their films - as world, international or Czech premieres - to the public, film industry and press during the four-day event which runs from July 1 - 4. In addition to presenting their films to the enthusiastic audience, the participants will take part in a master class and meetings with industry experts from various fields in order to build up their international network. The EFP initiative is supported by the Creative Europe - Media Programme of the European Union and the respective EFP member organisations.

This year's group has already a lot to show for itself: Lora Mure-Ravaud's short film BLACKJACK, about two loners in a hotel becoming more and more attracted to each other, was awarded Best Swiss Short Film 2017 at the Winterthur festival. From Bosnia and Herzegovina comes Neven Samardzic, whose senior thesis film CLEAN tells the story of a junkie trying to get clean. It won The Heart of Sarajevo for Best Student Film in 2017. The Croatian director and screenwriter Judita Gamulin was among the finalists of the 43rd Student Academy Awards in 2016 with FLOWERS (2015). Her new film MARICA, which she presents at EFP FUTURE FRAMES, follows an average woman on the day when she decides to change her life completely. Hleb Papou's THE LEGIONNAIRE was part of the 32nd Venice International Film Critics Week in 2017. His graduation film from Italy's Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia shows the moral conflict of a police officer, who has to clear out the occupied house where his mother and brother live.

After the success of his first film, the award-winning LEJLA, the Dutch director Stijn Bouma who was accepted for the film factory programme at the Sarajevo Film Academy realized REGAINED MEMORY about a recently widowed man, who, overwhelmed by the past, forgets his responsibilities towards his daughter. Another award-winner is SWEET HOME CZYŻEWO by the Polish director, screenwriter and editor Jakub Radej about a man, who, after a successful stint in the US, returns to his hometown in the hope of rekindling an old romance. WHERE THE SUMMER GOES (CHAPTERS ON YOUTH), the visually stunning feature short film debut of David Pinheiro Vicente from Portugal, premiered at this year's Berlin International Film Festival. Georgian director David Gurgulia had already produced and directed films for ad campaigns before starting his studies at the Film State University where he directed DIALECT, among others. It tells the story of a sound designer on a mission to record the "divine language" of children living in a "sacred reserve". The Slovak Republic is represented by A WARM COMEDY ABOUT DEPRESSION, MADNESS AND UNFULFILLED DREAMS from the actor and director Michal Duris, who channels his own experiences while growing up. Also putting experiences to the test is the Swedish filmmaker Dawid Ullgren with 1981 about a gay man exploring his deepest sexual desires in a sauna.

EFP FUTURE FRAMES has proven to be an important platform for discovering exciting new European directors thanks to the EFP member organisations who nominated their most interesting young talents. Like Klara Kochanska from Poland, who took part in Future Frames in 2016 and now presents her feature film debut VIA CARPARTIA in the East of the West competition at KVIFF. "When I joined Future Frames in 2016 with my diploma film THE TENANTS I still felt only like a student. But Future Frames made me realise, that I can also be a part of the filmmakers community and maybe a part of the industry. So that feeling gave me the strength to fight and stand up for the next project. Because to be honest, despite the big international success of THE TENANTS it still was very hard to make our feature-length debut." The final selection made from the 27 entries this year is undertaken by KVIFF's artistic director Karel Och and programme coordinator Anna Purkrabkova. With its special attention to a young cinema, the festival attracts a wonderfully curious young audience, thus making KVIFF the perfect place for EFP to present the next generation of film professionals.

The following EFP member organisations support EFP FUTURE FRAMES:
Association of Filmmakers of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatian Audiovisual Centre, EYE International (The Netherlands), Georgian National Film Center, Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual I.P. / ICA (Portugal), Istituto Luce Cinecittà (Italy), Polish Film Institute, Slovak Film Institute, Swedish Film Institute and Swiss Films.

When memories that are fading too fast and responsibilities that are difficult to take on if you don't have a clear head; following one's heart isn't enough. These are problems that weigh down upon Amir, who has recently become a widower. The moment he realises he can't remember what his late wife looked like is a turning point that induces him to start delving into the past, to a time when he was still a child. Stijn Bouma's thoughtful film reminds us how important it is to accept our own past so that we can fully appreciate the present.

Two adolescent sons and their parents. A family whose members know each other so well that their affection for one another often develops into an oppressive relationship. They all have their dreams but perhaps more important than fulfilling these aspirations is the fact that the others should recognise them as something worth striving for. Talented director Michal Duris confines characters into individual frames on screen, which is just as claustrophobic for the viewer as their daily life is for the family. Yet, as the film's title suggests, we may certainly laugh at depression while madness might make a good subject for a warm comedy.

Marica's husband has ongoing problems and, for her, it's the final straw that prevents her from returning home from work, but it also allows her to finally be on her own. To have the time to reflect upon the life she doesn't and possibly will never have. Nevertheless, this short rebellion will help her gather her strength. Although, who knows, perhaps she already had it in her when she decided not to open the door to her flat... MARICA is a fragile film about an elusive moment in time where little seems to happen yet turns out to be life-changing.

The language of God can't be learned if you can't already speak it. Nor can it be recorded or reproduced. Despite this warning, Mithras, a sound engineer, heads out to a sacred reserve to spend a week trying to do just that. Armed with technical equipment, he disturbs a world of endless silence, a world permeated with mysticism and ritual. The seven days spent together with the community at the reserve, however, change not only Mithras but also those who speak the divine language.

Fleeting encounters and glances exchanged, a mutual attraction that requires no words. Two lonely people who meet under unusual circumstances and in an unusual place. Leila works as a croupier at a hotel casino in a predominantly male environment; Camil books himself a room in the same hotel... A fragment in the life of a woman whose singular appearance prompts a myriad of questions; Leila, however, guards her privacy assiduously. A multi-layered story about mutual attraction, love, and the casino where, on this occasion, gambling isn't the main focus.

On a very hot summer day, a group of youngsters take off for the river. To pass the time, they amuse themselves with the story of a man whose pet snake tried to swallow him whole. In sharing this tale, it seems that they unwittingly set the tone of this lazy, carefree day. Meticulously composed images, reminiscent more of paintings than scenes from a film, tangibly evoke the atmosphere of a languorous summer, its sultry heat, and the timelessness that can be spent in delicious tranquillity, or sharing even more delicious romantic adventures.

"You're no local anymore" Marcin is told by an old friend at a party and he has to admit that he's right. Marcin spent three years in America and his hometown is not in a hurry to welcome him back. His big plans, illusions and hopes come up against a reality that is certainly more sober and more hostile. Talented director Jakub Radej follows one day in the life of a man who doesn't intend to give up, even though, with every passing hour, he moves closer to losing everything he had been looking forward to and has believed in until now.

When Fudo's best friend dies of an overdose, he decides to go clean once and for all. He will try to reconstruct his life, which, for too long, essentially meant surviving from one fix to the next. But how is he supposed to go about it when his addiction cost him his friends, his money, his family and reputation? His resolve is unwavering, his goal uncertain. After all, this isn't the first time he has tried to come off drugs... In CLEAN director Neven Samardzic doesn't embellish his hero in any way; he simply reminds us gently that junkies deserve hope as well.

Sweden, 1981. Married couple Ivar and Pal set out for a gay sauna in anticipation of trying out something new and adding some zest to their rather conventional lifestyle. Together they head for an "etablissement" with specific rules, which might be summed up as "what happens in the sauna, stays in the sauna". They both hope they will leave the place just as besotted with each other as they were when they arrived. 1981 is a film which blends explicit eroticism with fragile love in a tale of everyday life and the kind of excesses one should only treat oneself to once in a while.
