christos nikou to mentor efp future frames 2026

EFP (European Film Promotion) and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) are pleased to announce that Greek filmmaker Christos Nikou will serve as this year’s mentor for EFP FUTURE FRAMES – Generation NEXT of European Cinema.

In an exclusive mentoring session, the award-winning director, screenwriter and producer will share insights into his professional journey and discuss the artistic and practical challenges of building a sustainable career in today’s film industry. The session will focus on the “survival strategies” of filmmakers: how to find and trust one’s own artistic voice, choose collaborators, navigate international opportunities and remain creatively independent, rather than simply following shifting funding priorities, festival expectations or prevailing industry trends.

Christos Nikou is a self-taught director, screenwriter, and producer. In 2012, he directed his only short film, Km, which screened at more than 40 international film festivals. His debut feature, Apples, opened the Venice Orizzonti section in 2020 before screening at Telluride and TIFF later that year. Greece's official submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, Apples was released in more than 70 countries and was named one of the National Board of Review's Top Five International Films. In 2023, Nikou made his English-language debut with Fingernails, starring Jessie Buckley, Riz Ahmed, Jeremy Allen White, and Luke Wilson. He directed, co-wrote, and co-produced the film with Cate Blanchett's Dirty Films and FilmNation Entertainment. Fingernails premiered at Telluride, TIFF, and San Sebastián before its worldwide release by Apple. Currently, he is working on his third feature film, Background, produced by Heyday Films.

The mentoring session with Christos Nikou is part of the broader industry programme of EFP FUTURE FRAMES, which introduces outstanding recent graduates from European film schools to the international film industry. The initiative offers the selected filmmakers exclusive access to industry experts, festival programmers and international decision-makers.

With its focus on emerging talent, artistic exchange and professional development, EFP FUTURE FRAMES continues to strengthen the visibility of a new generation of European filmmakers and supports them as they take their first steps onto the international stage.

EFP FUTURE FRAMES – Generation NEXT of European Cinema, in collaboration with KVIFF, is made possible thanks to the support of Creative Europe – MEDIA, Allwyn, and the participating national film promotion institutes, EFP’s member organisations: Croatian Audiovisual Centre, Czech Film Center, Finnish Film Foundation, Instituto de la Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales (Spain), Lithuanian Film Centre, SEE NL (The Netherlands), Slovenian Film Centre, Swedish Film Institute, SWISS FILM and Unifrance. The main media partner is Variety, with Cineuropa and Fred Film Radio as additional media partners.
